News From The Hockey World

Hello everyone, I am sorry that I've been behind on these blogs. It's been a really busy summer, but I'm back now and with alot of news from around the hockey world today.

****Washington forward Tomas Fleischmann avoids arbitration hearing and agrees to 1 yr deal worth $2.6 million with Capitals

Today the NHL announced that the Winter Classic will be held on January 1st, 2011 and between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals. This years Classic will be in Pittsburgh and played at Heinz Field.

The free agent market got a little lighter on Tuesday.
After the L.A. Kings fell out of the mix with Kovalchuk they turned to Alex Ponikarovsky in hopes to improve their roster. The deal got done today and the team announced that they signed him to a one year deal worth $3m and that he could earn himself bonus's of $200K.

The New York Rangers were also busy today in the free agent market by agreeing to terms with former L.A. Kings forward Alexander Frolov. The deal is worth $3m for one year.

Rumor: Former Washington/ Carolina defense Brian Pothier has decided to leave the NHL. Brian has signed with Geneva-Servette of the Swiss. Reports are showing that he has yet signed the contract but it looks very likely that he will be playing for them in this upcoming season.

The New York Islanders and Matt Moulson have both avoided salary arbitration. The club annouced that they have come to terms on a one year deal worth $2.45m for the season. The RFA scored 30 goals and had 48 points in 82 games with the Islanders last season.

Former Toronto Maple Leafs Defenseman Mike Van Ryn has seemed to call it quits. The ex-leaf has agreed to become the new assistant coach for The Niagara IceDogs of the OHL for the upcoming season.
